Brain Research
ADD Online Checklist
  • Dana Brain Wave   Great site for information on brain diseases and brain disorders.
  • Education Connection   Articles and resources of special interest to educators to learn about brain-based teaching methods, help students improve reading and writing skills, or explore the possibilities brain research provides.  Many excellent articles.
Conditions
  • Reading and Language Disorders   Dyslexia and problems with phonological processing affect a good percentage of children who are learning to read. New tools and understanding from brain science offer some help.
  • Disorder Archive .  Promoting awareness of children's disorders -- everything from Asperger Syndrome to Williams Syndrome.
  • Health Library   Have questions about a particular medical condition, newborn care, parenting or handling a fever? The Health Library of The Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital offers over 4000 pages of medical and parenting advice.
Helpful Information
  • Sources for Books on Disk or Tape:

  •               Nonprofit and government organizations:

Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Inc.
                  800-221-4792

    www.rfbd.org

American Printing House for the Blind

                  Library of Congress
National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped

  • WriteBrain Potential.   This powerful innovative handwriting program is a holistic alternative to Ritalin for ADD/ADHD, the learning disabled, special needs child, even the brain injured.  Recent research on the cerebellum, the "little brain" located at the base of the brain that coordinates movement, has found that it exerts far more influence on higher brain functions, such as "carrying out of willed actions and control of hostile impulses," than previously thought!
Learning Disabilities
  • LD Resources .  Richard Wanderman's site has a VERY extensive list of links related to Learning Disabilities. You'll probably find about anything you need here.
Nutrition
  • Carbohydrate Addicted Kids.   Surprising new information from Drs. Richard F. and Rachel F. Heller.  Does your child or teen grab food on the run?  Does it seem as if your youngster could live on pizza and fries while guzzling soda and juice?  He or she may have an insulin and blood-sugar imbalance.  Carbohydrate addicted kids may suffer from a chemical imbalance that can be the cause of weight gain, mood swings (sometimes extreme), hyperactivity, even learning and behavior problems. A quick test is to try a "high protein only diet" for a few days or a week.  If you see dramatic changes in your child, you'll know why!  We have FIRST-HAND experience with this issue and have seen the results!
  • Dr. Doris Rapp.   She wrote, "Is This Your Child?: Allergies and Your Family."  Very interesting information about relationship of nutrition and behavior.
Organizations, Publications, and Resources
  • Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation   BPKids.org  Bipolar Disorder looks different in children and adolescents than it does in adults. Children usually have an ongoing, continuous mood disturbance that is a mix of mania and depression. This rapid and severe cycling between moods produces chronic irritability and few clear periods of wellness between episodes. Excellent articles and information.  Great info regarding I.E.P.s.
  • Kid Power   A huge site of links for special needs kids.  This site has an incredible amount of information.
  • Special Child - an online publication dedicated to parents of children with special needs from The Resource Foundation for Children with Challenges. The e-zine offers many categories of helpful articles.
